The Main Beach Association Activities up to 4/3:
Prior to the Association being formed, on 11th November 2015 we did a survey of Mariners Cove traffic and highlighted the difference between this and Sunland’s survey done in mid 2015. Also questioned how the proposed 808 car parks were only going to produce the same traffic flow as the current 198 car parks.
Since then Sunland have done a revised traffic flow and increased the number of parks to 955.
Since the 29th December 2015 when the association was formed we have:
- Gone from zero members to 193 as at 4th
- Gone from zero on our mailing list to over 500 addressees.
- Created a face book page at www.facebook/MainBeachGC
- Written to the Council on 12 separate occasions (subjects below)
- Hosted a public meeting on 18/1 at Southport Yacht Club to enable the GCCC Planning Department to explain the new City Plan. Approximately 350 people attended this meeting.
- Hosted a public meeting on 15/2 where Philip Follent, ex city and state architect spoke about the new City Plan as it related to Main Beach and The Spit.
The subjects of communication with the GCCC have been:
- 28/1 Disputing Sunland’s “minor” change application that increased the levels of underground parking from 2 to 3 and car parks for 808 to 955. Council replied on 15/2 that in their opinion this was a “minor” change.
- 28/1 Preferred Character and Land Use on The Spit. Council replied on 26/2 giving various answers to the questions that were raised but basically referring to the new City Plan.
- 29/1 Requesting a meeting with Mayor Tom Tate. No reply has been received.
- 2/2 and 11/2 requesting information about the response that the GCCC made to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines regarding GCCC attitude to a change of the lease on Mariners Cove to allow residential accommodation. A telephone call from council on 3/3 indicated that a reply would be sent within the next week.
- 4/2 Querying legal and safety requirements that Sunland would require to move 41,000 litres of petrol and diesel from their current above ground location to the 3rd level of their proposed underground parking. Council replied on 23/2 that Sunland had only to meet the previously imposed conditions to prevent environment harm but due to legislative changes were no longer required to hold an environmental approval certificate.
- 7/2 Traffic Impact Assessments. A telephone call from council on 3/3 indicated that a reply would be sent within the next week.
- 23/2 Regarding the character of the proposed buildings and how of character they were with the surrounding developments. No reply has been received.
- 24/2 Querying the Reclamation of 5,288 square meters of land from the Broadwater. No reply has been received.
- 29/2 Regarding the Visual Impact of the proposed buildings and how much they exceeded the Local Area Plan in every way. No reply has been received.
A request has also been sent on 22/2 to the Queensland Government under the Right to Information Act to obtain information regarding the change of lease on Mariners Cove. This request was acknowledged on 1/3 and a reply is expected by 30/3.
The Association’s next project is to work on the revitalisation of the Main Beach Village on Tedder Ave. This is only just starting and we will post further information as the project evolves.
